Early childhood assessments are different from high-stakes testing done in grades 3-12. Early Childhood Assessment addresses these issues by identifying the important outcomes for children from birth to age 5 and the quality and purposes of different techniques and instruments for developmental assessments. The assessment also provides information for teacher's to share with parents at conferences etc. This is because progress in learning develops when attention is paid to children’s strengths, interests and dispositions. Assessments measure a student's ability and track his progress as he improves his skills. This chapter looks at the purposes served by the process of assessment as well as the major ways assessments can be misused. Parents, grandparents, early childhood providers, and other caregivers can participate in developmental monitoring.
